ChatGPT Ads Opened in India. Almost No Small Business Should Buy Them Yet.
ChatGPT Ads opened to Indian advertisers on 31 August 2026 at a ₹725 per day floor. But AI referrals are still 0.2% of all web visits, roughly 7,378 advertisers exist worldwide, and finance, health and legal are US-only. Test it with spare budget, not shifted budget.
Three weeks ago I wrote that ChatGPT had stopped sending traffic to your blog and started sending it to your homepage. In that post I drew a line and refused to cross it: OpenAI runs ads, I said, but that is a separate, labelled surface, not the organic answer, and it was not what that piece was about.
On 31 August 2026, that surface opened to Indian advertisers. So this is the other side of the line.
Here is my position up front, because you are going to read a lot of breathless posts this month telling you to move budget: the channel is real, the numbers behind it are not yet knowable, and anyone quoting you an Indian CPC or ROAS for ChatGPT Ads in September 2026 is making it up. That includes agencies. Especially agencies.
01 What actually opened in India, and on what date?
OpenAI published a post on 31 August 2026 announcing it was launching self-service ad purchasing in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, taking ChatGPT Ads to "over 40 countries" across its various sales channels.
The India-specific reporting landed a few days earlier. TechCrunch reported on 27 August 2026 that ads would appear on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in India, starting with 50 brand partners, alongside agency partnerships with WPP and Omnicom. PPC Land, writing on 30 August 2026, counted India going live on 29 August as part of a run that took OpenAI from 9 ad markets to 41 in a matter of weeks.
There is a genuine inconsistency here that you should check in your own account before you plan anything. PPC Land quoted OpenAI on 30 August saying self-serve was still pending — "ChatGPT Ads are available directly through our Ads Solutions team and through our agency and technology partners. Self-service access through Ads Manager is coming soon." TechCrunch, three days earlier, put the Ads Manager launch in September. OpenAI's own 31 August post then described self-service purchasing as launching. The most likely reading is that the 31 August announcement is what flipped it on, and the earlier reporting predates it.
India had more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users as of February 2026, with the majority on free or Go tiers — the exact tiers that now carry ads.
That 100 million figure comes from Sam Altman via TechCrunch in February 2026. It is the single strongest argument for paying attention. It is not an argument for spending money yet, and I will come to why.
02 Where do the ads actually appear, and who sees them?
OpenAI's help documentation is unusually plain about this. "Ads appear below ChatGPT responses." Not inside the answer. Below it.
An ad unit carries an advertiser name, a favicon, a title, description copy, a landing page and an image asset. If that sounds like a search ad wearing different clothes, that is roughly correct.
Who sees them matters more than most coverage admits. OpenAI states: "We do not show ads to users on Plus, Pro, or any Business plan, or to any accounts identified as belonging to users under 18."
Read that again if you sell B2B. The people most likely to be paying ₹1,900 a month for ChatGPT Plus — founders, consultants, senior marketers, engineers, the exact buyers a B2B SaaS or services business wants — are the people who will never see your ad. The addressable audience for ChatGPT Ads in India skews, by design, toward free and low-cost tiers.
On selection, OpenAI says the system "considers multiple signals, including the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad's landing page, title, copy, advertiser-provided context hints, and, when ads personalization is enabled, select signals from a user's broader ChatGPT experience." OpenAI also states plainly that "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides" and that "advertisers do not receive access to people's private conversations."
03 What does ₹725 a day actually buy?
₹725 per day is the minimum daily campaign budget in India, reported by both TechCrunch and PPC Land. That is roughly ₹22,000 a month — which, for context, sits inside my own retainer range, and is real money for the businesses I work with.
What you get for it, mechanically, is a campaign structure that shipped in late July 2026. Per Search Engine Roundtable's 27 July 2026 write-up of OpenAI's help documentation and advertiser emails, ChatGPT Ads now supports:
| Capability | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Conversions objective + oCPC bidding | You can optimise toward conversions, not just clicks |
| Average daily budgets | Spend is averaged over a rolling 7-day window, not capped hard each day |
| Automatic spend pacing | Budget distributed through the day rather than front-loaded |
| Geographic exclusions | You can exclude locations — useful for service-area businesses |
| AppsFlyer and Adjust integrations | App install attribution |
| Automatic Advanced Matching | Conversion measurement using hashed customer data |
| Bulk API | Create and update campaigns asynchronously at scale |
| Refreshed product feed ads | Card format showing price and star ratings |

That is a more complete feature set than most new ad platforms launch with. It is not a beta toy. What it lacks is history.
04 How big is this channel, honestly?
Small. Much smaller than the coverage implies.
Contentsquare's 2026 Digital Experience Benchmark, published 3 April 2026 and built on 99 billion sessions across 6,500 sites, found that AI-referred traffic was 0.2% of total visits in 2025. It grew 632% year over year, which sounds enormous until you remember what it grew from. It converted at 1.3%, up from 0.8% — respectable, below email's 1.9%.
That is organic AI referral rather than paid, so treat it as a proxy for how much of the internet's attention currently sits inside AI assistants at all. The answer is: not much of it yet.
Roughly 7,378 distinct advertisers were identified across ChatGPT Ads by third-party measurement in mid-August 2026 (PPC Land, 30 August 2026). Google Ads and Meta each have millions. A near-empty auction can mean cheap inventory — or it can mean the audience is not worth bidding on yet, and nobody has proven which.
Meanwhile ChatGPT's own share of generative AI web traffic fell from roughly 76% in June 2025 to around 53% by May 2026, while Gemini went from under 9% to 27–28% (Similarweb, page updated 24 August 2026). You would be buying into the leading platform at the moment its lead is narrowing.
And OpenAI's own trajectory tells you how young this is: $100 million annualised revenue within six weeks of the February 2026 launch, against an internal 2026 advertising target of $2.4 billion (PPC Land, 30 August 2026). The gap between those two numbers is the pressure that will shape pricing, ad load and targeting over the next year. You will be testing on shifting ground.
05 Which businesses are locked out before they start?
This is the section most coverage skips, and for a lot of Indian SMBs it ends the conversation.
OpenAI's advertising policies, effective 31 August 2026, place financial services, health services and legal services in a restricted category that is currently US-only. Loans, credit cards, insurance, investment services, medical devices, dental, diagnostics, and licensed legal practice — all require manual review and advertiser verification, and all are listed as available in the United States.
Fully disallowed categories include gambling and betting, alcohol and tobacco, adult content and dating, recreational drugs, counterfeit goods, political and electoral advertising, individual housing and job listings, and scams.
Landing pages must "clearly relate to the advertiser and the offer being promoted" and accurately represent what is being sold. Ads must be "truthful and not misleading", with no unsubstantiated health or wellness claims and no deceptive endorsements.
If you run a lending business, an insurance brokerage, a diagnostics chain, a law practice or an ed-tech product making outcome claims, check the policy before you build a single campaign. A large slice of Indian SMB advertising sits in exactly these buckets.
06 What can nobody tell you yet?
Everything you would actually need to make a budget decision.
There is no published Indian CPC. No Indian CTR benchmark. No category-level conversion rate. No cost-per-acquisition data. No evidence about whether a ChatGPT ad click behaves like a Google search click, a Meta discovery click, or something new. India went live on 29–31 August. As I write this on 6 September, meaningful Indian performance data cannot exist, because not enough of it has been spent yet.
If a pitch deck this month shows you ChatGPT Ads benchmarks for India, the correct response is to ask which advertisers, over what period, at what spend — and then watch what happens.
This is the same failure mode I described in the eight places small business marketing budgets quietly disappear: money moves toward whatever is newest and least measurable, and the leak is invisible for two quarters.
07 So who should actually test it, and how?
Three conditions. If you fail any of them, wait.
- Your existing channels are already fixed. If your Meta or Google account has unresolved structural problems, a new platform will not rescue it — it will just spread the mess wider.
- The ₹22,000 a month is genuinely spare. Not moved off a channel that is converting. Spare. This is a learning budget, and you should expect to write it off.
- Your category is allowed. Check the policy first, not after you have built creative.
If all three hold, here is how I would structure the test:
- Run it for a minimum of six weeks. Average daily budgets work on a rolling seven-day window, so anything shorter tells you nothing.
- Start on the Conversions objective with oCPC, not clicks. Clicks on a brand-new surface are the easiest metric to fool yourself with.
- Tag every URL with distinct UTMs before you spend a rupee, and build a dedicated GA4 channel group for it. Do not let this traffic land in "Referral" and disappear.
- Use geographic exclusions if you serve specific cities. The default is wider than most Indian service businesses need.
- Judge it against your actual blended CAC, not against a platform-reported ROAS. New platforms report generously.
- Write the landing page for a reader who was mid-conversation, not mid-search. Intent arrives differently here — the ad sits below an answer the person was already reading.
08 What should you not do?
Do not move budget out of Meta or Google to fund this. Those channels have years of your own account data behind them. This one has six days of Indian history.
Do not conflate paid placement with organic AI visibility. Similarweb found roughly 26% of ChatGPT responses carry ads — that is a labelled slot underneath the answer, and buying it does nothing whatsoever to make ChatGPT cite you inside the answer. Those are two different problems with two different fixes, and I covered the organic one in the previous post.
Do not let anyone sell you a "ChatGPT Ads specialist" retainer this month. Nobody has managed Indian ChatGPT Ads spend for longer than a week. Expertise here is currently a claim, not a credential — mine included.
Do not skip the tracking setup. The most common outcome of a new-channel test is not that it fails; it is that six weeks later nobody can tell whether it worked.
09 What is the honest summary?
ChatGPT Ads in India is a real channel, at a real price, with a real audience of over 100 million weekly users, most of whom are on the tiers that show ads. That is genuinely new and worth knowing about.
It is also 0.2%-of-the-internet small, has fewer than 8,000 advertisers globally, excludes paying subscribers and under-18s, locks out finance, health and legal outside the US, and has no Indian performance data of any kind. The platform's own parent is chasing a $2.4 billion target from a $100 million base, which means the rules will keep moving.
Test it with spare money if your house is otherwise in order. Do not fund it by taking money away from something that already works. And be extremely suspicious of anyone who sounds certain about it this month.
Frequently asked questions
When did ChatGPT Ads become available to Indian advertisers?
OpenAI announced self-service ad purchasing for India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa on 31 August 2026. PPC Land recorded India going live on 29 August 2026. Reporting from 27–30 August described self-serve Ads Manager access as still pending, so verify availability in your own account before planning spend.
What is the minimum daily budget for ChatGPT Ads in India?
₹725 per day, roughly ₹22,000 a month. This figure was reported by TechCrunch on 27 August 2026 and by PPC Land on 30 August 2026.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Ads appear on the Free and Go tiers. OpenAI states that it does not show ads to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, or to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18. If your buyers are senior professionals on paid plans, they will not see your ads.
Where do ChatGPT ads appear on screen?
OpenAI's help documentation states that ads appear below ChatGPT responses, not inside them. Each ad carries an advertiser name, favicon, title, description copy, landing page and image asset.
Do ChatGPT ads affect the answers ChatGPT gives?
OpenAI states that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, and that ads are always clearly labelled and separate from answers. Buying ads does not make ChatGPT cite your site inside an organic answer — that is a separate problem.
Can Indian financial, health or legal businesses advertise on ChatGPT?
Not currently. OpenAI's advertising policies effective 31 August 2026 list financial services, health services and legal services as restricted categories requiring manual review and advertiser verification, available in the United States. Check the current policy before building campaigns.
What CPC or ROAS should I expect from ChatGPT Ads in India?
Nobody knows. India went live at the end of August 2026, so no meaningful Indian performance benchmarks exist yet. Any specific CPC, CTR or ROAS figure quoted for Indian ChatGPT Ads in September 2026 is not based on published data.
Should I move budget from Meta or Google Ads to test this?
No. Test it with genuinely spare budget you can afford to write off. Your existing accounts have years of your own performance data behind them; ChatGPT Ads in India has days. Treat it as a learning cost, not a reallocation.
